Lancaster Comics Day is to have a very pleasing undercurrent, highlighting the work of writers and artists who’ve contributed to Doctor Who comics!

Held on Sunday 14th June 2015 at the Lancester Library, there will be a Doctor Who panel as well as opportunities to meet creators face-to-face. Perhaps most notable to Whovians is John Freeman, creator of the popular site, Down The Tubes, and editor of Doctor Who Magazine from 1990 to 1992. He was also in charge of Doctor Who Classic Comics when that launched, and wrote a number of Seventh Doctor strips for DWM including A Glitch in Time, the original Planet of the Dead, and, with Paul Cornell, Emperor of the Daleks.

Outside of Doctor Who, Freeman has also written for Judge Dredd Megazine, ThunderCats, and Death’s Head II.

Another acclaimed guest is John Ridgway, the most prolific artist and inker during the Sixth and Seventh Doctor’s tenures in DWM. He can be credited as the co-creator of popular companion (and, for much of the time, penguin) Frobisher, and drew such storylines as Voyager, The World Shapers, A Cold Day in Hell!, Train-Flight, and Flashback.

He’s also provided art for Commando Comics2000AD, and Babylon 5, and most recently returned to the Whoniverse with 2010’s Torchwood tale, Overture: A Captain Jack Adventure, and for the sixth issue of IDW’s Prisoners of Time.

Possibly the most widely recognised name attending is Andy Diggle, who’s best-known for The Losers, but has also worked on Dearedevil, Swamp Thing, and Hellblazer. However, as head writer of IDW’s Doctor Who (2012) comics, his writing credits include the debut serial, Hypothetical Gentleman, The Eye of Ashaya, and Sky Jacks, all starring the Eleventh Doctor.

That latter tale introduced Clara Oswald to the comic books, and was co-written by another attendee of the Lancaster Comics Day, Eddie Robson. Robson has written many Tenth and Eleventh Doctor stories for Doctor Who Adventures, but most Whovians know him for his work with Big Finish, including Phobos, Human Resources, and 1963: Fanfare for the Common Men.

Fresh from his touring cartoon workshops and lectures, Tim Quinn will also be attending the Comics Day, and it’s the perfect time to get It’s Even Bigger on the Inside, a newly-updated book of collected strips, signed. Working with Dicky Howett, these strips appeared in Doctor Who Magazine as Doctor Who?, and were previously collected together in The Doctor Who Fun Book and It’s Bigger on the Inside! in the late 1980s.

Finally, Dave Taylor will be on hand in Lancaster to talk to you about his experiences drawing the Twelfth Doctor and Clara for Titan Comics’ Terrorformer, the opening storyline for their Twelfth Doctor ongoing comic series. Who knows – maybe he’ll even sketch Capaldi for you! Away from Doctor Who, Taylor is best known for drawing Judge Dredd in 2000AD.

Lancaster Comics Day will take place on 14th June from 11am to 6pm (approx.); tickets will be £5, £2 concessions (unwaged, students), kids under 13 go free if accompanied by an adult. Visit their Facebook page to find out more!
